Being a Christian doesn’t mean you won’t sin anymore. It means you’ll want to sin less.

When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and invite Him into our lives, He promises to forgive us of all our sins right there and then. Colossians 1:14 says, “Because of what the Son (Jesus) has done, we have been set free. Because of him, all of our sins have been forgiven.”

Sadly, though, we are not made perfect right then. We try to live better lives now Jesus has washed away our sins, but the truth is that even when we try hard we still can get it wrong.

We’re still Christians, even when we sin, but have still have weaknesses and the temptation to sin. But when we do sin, we can tell Jesus what we did wrong (that’s called “confession”) and ask Jesus to forgive us.

There are many characters in the Bible who failed and were forgiven and brought back into a relationship with God. They are a great example to us. They were ordinary people, trying to live for Jesus. But when they failed, they turned to God, were forgiven, and started walking with Jesus once again.

Think of it like this: Jesus saves us from our sins and takes away our old filthy clothes and gives us new, clean clothes. We will get them dirty again as we live in this sinful world, but Jesus will forgive our sins and clean us over and over again. Meanwhile, we should do our best to keep those new clothes as clean as we can.

Bible Truth

“But God is faithful and fair. If we admit that we have sinned, he will forgive us our sins. He will forgive every wrong thing we have done. He will make us pure” (1 John 1:9).

“He has removed our lawless acts from us as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12).

“You should obey. You shouldn’t give in to evil longings. They controlled your life when you didn’t know any better. The one who chose you is holy. So you should be holy in all that you do. It is written, ‘Be holy, because I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:14–16).
