Can I listen to secular music?
Here's the answer:
As long as a song is pleasing to God, we can listen to it.
Secular music has a lot of catchy songs. Sadly, some secular music contains bad words and inappropriate content. God only wants us to listen to good music (Philippians 4:8). Worship songs are always glorifying to God.
When you are trying to figure out if a song is okay to listen to, ask yourself these questions:
• What is the purpose of the song?
• Does the song make me happy or sad?
• What do the words mean?
• Are there any bad words or inappropriate contents?
When we ask ourselves these questions, we can quickly tell if a song is okay to listen to. We need to focus our mind on things that are pleasing to God and this includes our music choices. When in doubt, just jam out to some worship music!
Bible Truth
"Think about things that are in heaven. Don’t think about things that are only on earth" (Colossians 3:2).
"Finally, my brothers and sisters, always think about what is true. Think about what is noble, right and pure. Think about what is lovely and worthy of respect. If anything is excellent or worthy of praise, think about those kinds of things" (Philippians 4:8).
"Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19).
