Can Christians celebrate birthdays?

Here's the answer:

Yes, Christians can celebrate birthdays.

Many people believe celebrating birthdays is wrong since there is not a biblical mandate for it. It doesn't help that the only biblical accounts of birthdays are negative (Genesis 40:20; Matthew 14:6). However, that doesn't mean we cannot celebrate birthdays. There is value to each person’s life, which means celebrating our birthdays is important.

If a person doesn't want to celebrate their birthday, that is okay, and if they do, that is okay, too. As long as God is involved in the person's decision to either celebrate or not, they have made the right decision. God wants us to live holy lives, and there is no reason to believe that celebrating birthdays isn't part of this beautiful life. Jesus died in order for us to have an abundant life (John 10:10).

With this abundant life, we can celebrate our birthdays as well as the birthdays of our loved ones. As long as we are celebrating in a holy way, there is no reason to believe we cannot celebrate. If you are in doubt of whether you should celebrate your birthday or not, talk with God in prayer. He will be able to help you find an answer.

"So eat and drink and do everything else for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).
