If there is fire in hell, how is it dark?
Here's the answer:
God uses human words to explain how bad hell is. No one knows exactly how will be.
In the Bible, many words are used to explain hell. One time, Jesus said, "But those who think they belong in the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness..." (Matthew 8:12). This could mean those in hell are away from the light of God in heaven.
In Luke 16, Jesus described a man in hell. He said, "In the place of the dead, the rich man was suffering terribly..." (v. 23). In the next verse, the man said, “…I am in terrible pain in this fire.” There seems to definitely be fire in hell.
At the end of time, the devil and others not in heaven will be sent to the lake of fire: "The devil had caused them to believe lies. He was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur. That is where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will all suffer day and night for ever and ever" (Revelation 20:10). There will definitely be fire there.
The good news is that we do not have to go to hell. We can believe in Jesus and have eternal life (John 3:16).
