Should we care about how we look?

Here's the answer:

Yes, we should care about how we look, as long as it doesn't become our focus.

Many people think it is vain to care about the way we look, but this is not true. As long as there is a healthy balance, there is no reason to believe that God wants us to neglect our appearance. God created each of us in His image, which shows His beauty (Genesis 1:27). Everyone looks different and everyone is beautiful. Our face, our hair, and everything about us was created by God. He doesn’t want us to not care about ourselves.

It is also important to remember that God looks at our hearts (1 Samuel 16:7). This means that God values our inner beauty. A person can be pretty on the outside but be very mean on the inside. We need to remember this whenever we are struggling with liking ourselves. God says we are beautiful as we are, even if we can’t see it right now (Psalm 139:13–16).

While God wants us to care about the way we look, He doesn’t want us to become obsessive. Our heart is the most important thing to God—not our appearance, weight, or clothing style. Our focus always needs to be on God. Whenever we start making our appearance our main focus, it becomes idolatry. Instead of doing this, we need to find a healthy balance of caring about how we look without it becoming an idol.

Bible Truth

"Fancy hairstyles don’t make you beautiful. Wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes doesn’t make you beautiful. Instead, your beauty comes from inside you. It is the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Beauty like this doesn’t fade away. God places great value on it. This is how the holy women of the past used to make themselves beautiful. They put their hope in God. And they followed the lead of their own husbands" (1 Peter 3:3–5).

"Charm can fool you. Beauty fades. But a woman who has respect for the Lord should be praised" (Proverbs 31:30).

"People who lift themselves up will be made humble. And people who make themselves humble will be lifted up" (Matthew 23:12).
