What does it mean that I was made in the image of God?

Here's the answer:

Being made in the image of God means that we mentally, morally, and socially resemble God. That may sound difficult, but we’ll explain below.

God created mankind unique by making us in His image (Genesis 1:27). Nothing else that God created is made in His image, so we are very special! Being made in God’s image does not mean that we physically look like Him. What it does mean is that we mentally, morally, and socially resemble God.

Do you have a pet? Have you named your pet? By naming your pet, you show you are made in the image of God. We are mentally made in the image of God because we can understand, reason, and choose. When we name our pets, solve a math problem, or write a story, we are proving that we are made in the image of God.

God created us "very good" with good morals, though our sin has polluted our hearts. God created us in perfect holiness and that is why all of us have a conscience. Have you ever lied and felt guilty about it? Your conscience causes you to feel guilty and your conscience shows that you are made in the image of God.

Do you have a best friend? God created us in His image socially to have a relationship with Him and others. It is not good for us to be alone because God made us to have friendships with Him and other people (Genesis 2:18). When you make a new friend at school or hug your mom, it shows you are made in the image of God.

Due to Adam and Eve’s disobedience, our image of God has been polluted with sin. The good news is that once we place faith in Jesus, God causes us to become new creations to grow to become more like Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). When we become a believer, God starts restoring us to become who God created us to be. Wow! We are new creations made in the image of God!
