What happens after we die?

Here's the answer:

This question has 2 answers—one for those who have a relationship with God and one for those who don’t.

The Bible says that when those people who have a relationship with Jesus die, we will go "away from our bodies and [be] at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8). This means their souls/spirits are taken to heaven because their sins have been forgiven. Their bodies will be resurrected later. These glorified bodies will live forever with God.

For those people who do not have a relationship with Jesus, death brings punishment. The souls/spirits of unbelievers are sent to a temporary judgment. In the end, unbelievers will be sent to the lake of fire.

We all deserve hell because of our sins, but God made a way to forgive sinners. He sent Jesus to die on the cross to take the pain and punishment sinners deserve. If we trust Jesus, God takes us to heaven when we die. But those who reject God's way must be separated in hell forever from the holy, perfect God.
