What is Pentecost Sunday?

Here's the answer:

Pentecost Sunday is the celebration of the receiving of the Holy Spirit in the church.

Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would not come until He left, and they had to wait for the Spirit’s arrival (John 16:7; Acts 1:2–9). Pentecost Sunday is the fulfillment of this promise. When all the believers were gathered in the church, the sound of a violent wind rushed in, and all were filled with the Spirit. Each of them was given various spiritual gifts to use for their kingdom work.

After the Holy Spirit had descended, the believers rushed out of the church and told everyone about what happened and the power from above. Today, some churches celebrate Pentecost Sunday because it is a reminder of God’s power at work in our lives. While we might not have the rushing wind coming into our churches, we do have the real power of the Spirit at work in our lives.

Pentecost Sunday also encourages us to go out and share the truth of Jesus Christ. Life is too short to waste. Rather than being consumed with the things of the world, we need to boldly proclaim the truth of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Once a person places faith in Jesus, they are given forgiveness, eternal life, and the promised Holy Spirit. Pentecost Sunday helps us to celebrate all the blessings we have been given in the Lord.

Bible Truth

"On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were together. They had locked the doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, ‘May peace be with you!’ Then he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were very happy when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, ‘May peace be with you! The Father has sent me. So now I am sending you.’ He then breathed on them. He said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven'" (John 20:19–23).

"When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers gathered in one place. Suddenly a sound came from heaven. It was like a strong wind blowing. It filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw something that looked like fire in the shape of tongues. The flames separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The Spirit gave them the ability to do this" (Acts 2:1–4).
