What is materialism?
Here's the answer:
Materialism is an obsession with physical, material things rather than spiritual things.
The Bible says that materialistic is not a good thing. It means that you are more focused on physical items, rather than spiritual things. It can lead you away from God. There is nothing wrong with owning items, but it is wrong if we idolize them.
The Bible is clear that we are to love God with all of our heart, mind, body, and soul (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37–38). How can we do this if our top priority is material items? We cannot serve two masters. We will either hate the one or love the other (Luke 16:13). With this in mind, we need to be careful where we place our time, energy, and focus.
Many people might think materialism will make them happy, but it is not true. King Solomon was a man who had abundant wealth, resources, and items. Despite having all of these things, he was not happy (Ecclesiastes 5:10, 12:13). Only having a personal relationship with God can truly make us happy and cause our hearts to rejoice.
Bible Truth
"But put God’s kingdom first. Do what he wants you to do. Then all those things will also be given to you" (Matthew 6:33).
"But then the worries of this life come to them. Wealth comes with its false promises. The people also long for other things. All of these are the kinds of things that crowd out the message. They keep it from producing fruit" (Mark 4:19).
"Then he said to them, 'Watch out! Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has'" (Luke 12:15).
