What is modesty?

Here's the answer:

Modesty is the act of being respectful of others by not being overly proud or drawing attention to ourselves.

To be modest is to respect others. If we want to serve God and show others we love Him, we need to be modest. We can act modestly in how we act and what we wear.

Modesty also requires us to look at our motives. We have to ask ourselves, "Am I doing this kind act in order for others to like me?" Another question to ask ourselves when it comes to dressing modestly is "Am I wearing this in order to get people to look at me?" Whenever we answer these questions in a way to bring glory to ourselves, we are acting with the wrong motives.

Everything we do needs to be with a heart of loving God. If modesty is something we struggle with, we can ask God for His help. He will help us to be respectful of others, dress modestly, and live with a heart of modesty throughout our lives. Be sure to also read your Bible and apply what it says into your life. By doing these things, you will be able to be modest.

Bible Truth

"So eat and drink and do everything else for the glory of God. Don’t do anything that causes another person to trip and fall. It doesn’t matter if that person is a Jew or a Greek or a member of God’s church. Follow my example. I try to please everyone in every way. I’m not looking out for what is good for me. I’m looking out for the interests of others. I do it so that they might be saved" (1 Corinthians 10:31–33).

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:14–16).

"In the same way, I want the women to be careful how they dress. They should wear clothes that are right and proper. They shouldn’t wear their hair in very fancy styles. They shouldn’t wear gold or pearls. They shouldn’t wear clothes that cost a lot of money" (1 Timothy 2:9).
