What does the Bible say about making decisions?
Here's the answer:
The Bible gives us helpful tips for how to make good decisions.
Making decisions according to biblical principles is found in seven steps. First pray, then define the issue, seek biblical wisdom, seek godly counsel, trust the Lord with the decision, be willing to accept mistakes and make necessary changes, and give praise to God for your success.
Before we make a decision, we need to go to Jesus in prayer. The Bible tells us we need to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). By praying to the Lord, He can help direct our decision. We can also ask Him for wisdom (James 1:5).
Next, we can define the issue and look at our possible options. Are we trying to decide between several options? Write down all the possible options and cross out the ones that go against God. By knowing our options, we can make a wise decision. Seeking biblical wisdom will be found by consulting the Bible. The Bible will be a lamp to our feet and direct us in the way we should go (Psalm 119:105).
In addition to biblical counsel, we can seek godly counsel from adults we trust (Proverbs 15:22). Godly counsel can be realized in the form of trusted Christians, adults, and family members. By having godly counsel, it will help us understand our options and make a better decision.
Once we have done this, we can trust God with the decision (Proverbs 3:5-6). If we have followed all the steps above, all we have to do now is to trust God. He will bring about the right outcome.
If we make a wrong decision, we need to accept the mistake and make any necessary changes. For example, if we do not consult God or we disobeyed Him in our decision making process, we need to correct this mistake and turn to Him. Lastly, we need to praise God for the success of our decision and for His help. It brings God great joy to know that we are turning to Him for help with our decisions rather than trusting in our own understanding.
Bible Truth
"If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault. But when you ask, you must believe. You must not doubt. That’s because a person who doubts is like a wave of the sea. The wind blows and tosses them around. They shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord. This kind of person can’t make up their mind. They can never decide what to do" (James 1:5-8).
"Your word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me" (Psalm 119:105).
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways obey him. Then he will make your paths smooth and straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
