I wish I was someone else. Is this wrong?
Here's the answer:
God created us to be who we are, and He thinks we’re all very special!
It’s basic human nature—we see someone, a sports star, a great musician or pop singer, an actor or actress, and we think, "I wish I was that person."
Now, there’s nothing wrong with following someone's example in how they live or what they have achieved as long as it is a good example. We all have people in our lives that we look up to and who inspire us. To actually wish to be someone though, is a little different.
First, just because someone impresses us so much does not mean his or her life is any better or happier than your own. Even many great celebrities, musicians, and sports stars are still not content in their lives. They simply can’t find any satisfaction in their lives—and often, it’s because they don’t know and follow God!
In addition to this, God actually warns us of another danger. In a letter to the Church Paul writes warning of selfishness ambition and jealousy: "What the sinful nature does is clear...It is full of jealousy and fits of anger. It is interested only in getting ahead...It wants what others have..." (Galatians 5:19–21).
We can easily become so jealous and infatuated with others that we bring sorrow and disappointment into our own lives because we feel we can never measure up. We feel cheated that we can’t have what we think we need. We can become so obsessed that we miss out on living the life that God gave us and simply enjoying every day as the unique creation we are.
God made each of us in His image. How amazing is that? In fact, God said He made us in an amazing and wonderful way (Psalm 139:14). He loves us just as we are, and He wants to love who He created us to be!
Finally, remember this: There was no mistake when God created you. In fact, you are the only person like you in the whole world. No one in the past, present, or future is quite the same! How special is that?
